iPad App Review:
When I was in college, I learned to play the guitar with a little help from my classmate. It was a fun hobby as we play our favorite songs whenever there was a break from our classes. We enjoyed it very much because it kept our mind relaxed thanks to the melody of live music that came from the tips of our fingers. What’s good about the new app developed by Boris Douarre is that you will not have to painstakingly learn the tabs and the chords. Just open Coach Guitar and take on the first two lessons for free: Wake Me Up When September Ends by Greenday and Stairway to Heaven by Led Zeppelin. You’ll also get a couple of Riffs with no charge: Stand by Me and Beat It.
As the title suggests, Coach Guitar will teach you how to play the guitar. This iPad app features straightforward video tutorials and color coded finger chart. If you have an iOS device, particularly iPhone and iPad, and want to learn how to play your favorite song with ease, look no further.
Personally, I enjoyed how the app presents the songs. The videos are broken down into different sections from Intro to various Parts. As soon as the video plays, it also stops by design after every change of chords. It will give you much needed time to put it into practice before getting to the next one. If you are having a hard time, you can press the slow motion playback feature which will reduce the speed of the video. Take note that the black fretboard corresponds to your guitar and the colored dots denote your fingers. The app will show you where to place your fingers and which strings you need to strum. It also supports 11 languages which include: English, French, Spanish, German, Brazilian, Italian, Portuguese, Korean, Russian, Japanese and Chinese.
I’m certain that Coach Guitar is one of the top guitar teaching apps in the market today. Whether you are a righty or a southpaw, you will easily learn to play the guitar with its video lessons and the ability to loop tutorials. Even if you can’t read music notes or guitar tabs, even if you are a beginner, you will be comfortable in no time. Basically, it is a visual teaching guitar app that will show you how to play famous songs. Full guitar lessons are composed of separate videos while riffs only have a few. Default songs and riffs are mentioned above though you can avail of more songs for $3.99 each. Songs library includes Tears in Heaven, Sweet Home Alabama, and Knockin’ on Heavens Door, to name a few.
The only drawback I see is the app doesn’t mention what key the guitar is tuned for. Also, an addition of search box will be welcome especially when you have a lot of songs in your library.
Nevertheless, Coach Guitar uses an easy method for you to learn how to play the guitar. It does not need tablature, music theory, and guitar chords. Give it a try as your initial investment is free so there’s nothing to lose and everything to gain. Plus, it’s definitely a lot cheaper than enrolling in personal guitar lessons.
